A cannabinoid is a type of substance present in the cannabis plant, the most well-known of which is THC. However, if you’re familiar with cannabis culture, you probably know a few more; especially if you have an interest in what’s in your weed! Cannabis is a plant with long-hailed medicinal and recreational properties, and a lot of that comes down to cannabinoids!
Both CBD and CBN have beneficial properties for people whose main aim isn’t necessarily to get blazed. And, now there’s so many products to choose from, more and more people are choosing high-ratio CBD and CBN products to meet their individual requirements. If you’re unsure about what exactly it is people like about these particular cannabinoids, the experts at Medallion Wellness are here to guide you!

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. (1) It’s used medically to treat a number of conditions, including:
- Seizure disorders (such as epilepsy)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Chronic pain
Nowadays, CBD has become a popular ingredient in many different wellness products that promote relaxation, improve sleep, and reduce pain. It is widely considered to have fewer disruptive and undesirable effects compared to THC, and can often be used in tincture, gummy, or capsule form. Some CBD products even come as a roll-on! However, even though some choose to take CBD by itself, some cannabis products employ a ratio of THC and CBD in their products. So what exactly does that mean?
If a product at our dispensary has a ratio on the label, it is showing the amount CBD to THC. This is usually measured in milligrams. So, if a product has a 1:1 label, it indicates that for every milligram of CBD in the product, there will also be one milligram of THC. THC gets you “high” and also has anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t get you high, but does have properties that promote relaxation and reduce pain. The higher the ratio of CBD to THC means less of a “high” feeling and vice versa. If you’re ever in any doubt about what a ratio means on our packaging, don’t be afraid to ask us for clarification!
CBN Quick Science
Cannabinol, or CBN, is a cannabinoid you might be hearing a lot more about in the near future! In a medical setting, evidence suggests it has value in the treatment of some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. (2) However, for recreational users, the key feature of CBN is its sedative properties!
CBN’s effects on the body include:
- “Full Body” Relaxation
- Anxiety Reduction
- Appetite Stimulation
CBN is far less abundant than THC in flower, and usually appears in higher percentages in older, degraded plant material. Whereas this material was often dismissed as having little value in the past, many producers have discovered that CBN is actually incredibly beneficial for many cannabis users! Like CBD, CBN does not appear to alter consciousness or trigger a “high”. The vast majority of CBN users are using the product because it promotes deep relaxation. Many of our customers swear by combined CBN/Indica products for sleep, and we’ve heard it all when it comes to personal experiences! Some people say it’s the most couch-locked they’ve ever felt (and that it was one of the only things that curbed their anxiety), while others say they’ll never have to take a sleeping pill again! As with any cannabis product, each user’s experience is different from the next, but what’s certain is this: the only way to know is to try it!
Are CBD and CBN Comparable?
Although they have some similar properties, when it comes down to it, CBD and CBN are two completely different cannabinoids. They have contrasting chemical makeups and distinctly different effects. If you’re longing for a better night’s sleep, recent studies indicate that CBN (in high ratios with THC) may be more effective than CBD. (3) The easiest way to break their differences down to something memorable is to say that:
- For relaxation, and to aid in pain-relief, look for products that contain CBD
- For sedative stress-relief, look for products that contain CBN
- For a combined effect, look for products that contain CBD and CBN in high ratios

Frequently Asked Questions
CBD and CBN are both cannabinoids that act on your endocannabinoid system, but each has its own distinct properties. Generally speaking, far more research has been done on the effects of CBD, which include relief from chronic pain relief, and inflammation reduction. CBN, though not as thoroughly studied, is known for its sedative effects, which can also increase appetite and promote deep relaxation.
Yes, but…In past years, CBN was dismissed as just another less potent cannabis byproduct. Although it does not have the psychoactive properties of THC, CBN has many beneficial sedative properties. Speak to your budtender about high CBN ratio products for intense relaxation and restful sleep.
