Is Vaping Safe?

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Modesto, Merced, Atwater, Fresno and the Central Valley

There are a lot of questions and concerns surrounding vaping right now. The CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investigating the lung injuries that have been associated with the use of e-cigarette and vaping products.

One of the primary risk factors that the CDC has identified pertains to the quality of the product consumers are smoking. We urge vape users to use tested products. Do not buy “off the street” or from informal sources. We encourage customers not to buy any products from informal sources because the caliber of the product could be compromised or have been cut with unsafe products. E-liquid solutions should be bought from a store that tests their products or has a trusted supplier. The current outbreak in lung injuries is not linked to a single product or substance. Read ingredients and ask questions about where the solution came from. We also suggest consumers do not add any additional substances or modify their e-products in any way.

At Medallion, the vape products we offer are tested and safe.

“We are dedicated to our mission to provide a cannabis experience that is convenient, informative, reliable and safe.”

What is Vaping?

Vaping is the action of using an e-cigarette. An electronic cigarette is a handheld battery-powered vaporizer that heats THC, CBD or nicotine, flavoring and other chemicals to create an aerosol. This aerosol is then inhaled into the lungs.

Vaping is different than traditional means of smoking because it doesn’t use fire.

Vaping can also implements fun flavors like watermelon or white gummy bear. There are a few different products you can smoke with a vape. You can smoke cannabis flower, concentrate, or an e-solution with flavoring and nicotine. E-cigarettes have been designed to effectively heat flower and allow for a potency range between ten to twenty-five percent. Flower can be vaporized through an electronic table top device, in addition to portable electronic vaporizers. Concentrates, much like the name, have a stronger effect and have a potency range starting at fifty percent and can reach up to ninety percent.

Some individuals enjoy vaping with flower because they get to avoid smoke but still enjoy the taste of the flower. Concentrate vape users enjoy the effectiveness of the high potency levels.

Everyone has a unique reaction to flower and concentrate, so what works for one person may not work for you. We encourage you to test out different products and find the one you enjoy most.

Why Do People Vape?

Many people who are addicted to nicotine have switched or are considering switching to e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are a better alternative to cigarettes because they expose you to less toxic chemicals than regular cigarettes. However, you still need to be aware that vaping is not a healthy practice and should not replace severe smoking habits like chain smoking. Some people are able to successfully use e-cigarettes to break their addiction to nicotine and stop smoking in general. But for many individuals, vaping is a way to smoke cannabis that doesn’t include skunk smells or have a bad taste. Instead, vaping can offer a milder flower flavor or the addition of a tasty flavor and often fruity smell.

Vaping has become very popular among youths today, but it should be noted that smoking is illegal until eighteen years of age.

This development among the young generation is concerning as underage smoking and vaping can affect their health and development negatively. If you have children, we encourage you to educate them on smoking.

What You Need to Know About Vaping

There have been three health-related problems that have developed around vaping in the last few years. These concerns include lung injuries, seizures and exploding e-cigarettes.

Exploding E-Cigarettes: Battery-related issues have put people’s health at risk. We encourage you to do your research and buy an e-cigarette that has good reviews, is trusted and is guaranteed as a safe product. At Medallion, we do not sell vape pens but we do sell e-solutions, concentrate and flower that can be used in vapes.

Seizures: The FDA has launched an investigation of seizures and are researching whether recent seizures cases are linked to e-cigarettes. Over the last decade, there have been about 127 reports of seizures that may be linked to vaping – research is still being performed. The FDA is not sure that e-cigarettes are the cause of said seizures.

Lung Injuries: The CDC is performing a study of the lung injuries associated with vaping. It is important to note that the lungs are not being affected by a viral or bacterial infection. The lungs are developing injuries from chemical exposure. This is why it is more important than ever to only vaporize unadulterated, high-quality products. As research develops, we will learn more about the causes of these lung injuries.

E-cigarettes have not been available long enough for there to be sufficient information on the long-term effects of the activity. One of the primary problems facing the CDC in their research is the large variety of products and substances available to vape users today. It is difficult to track health issues to one ingredient. Medallion Wellness encourages individuals to buy from a trusted supplier that tests their product.

Symptoms to Be Aware Of

If you do vape, we encourage you to be aware of your health. Look out for symptoms such as:

  • Increased coughing
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain

Some people who have been hospitalized for lung injuries said they had fevers, night sweats, chest pain and experienced moments where they felt they couldn’t breathe. If you vape a lot and develop one or more of these symptoms we encourage you to pause vaping habits and see your doctor.

FAQs

Is vaping better for you than smoking?

Vaping exposes your lungs to less toxic chemicals than traditional cigarettes. If you are looking to quit smoking cigarettes, an e-cigarette may help. However, some people end up smoking both cigarettes and vapes. If you are serious about quitting smoking, you may need to seek help from a professional.

What does vaping do to your lungs?

Frequent vaping can irritate your lungs and cause damage. More research is needed into the ingredients and specific vaping practices that have led to recent reports of lung-related injury and illness.

Can you get cancer from vaping?

In a recent study performed by researchers at New York University, they found that e-cigarettes are linked to lung cancer in mice and possibly bladder cancer as well. The mice were exposed to the amount of smoke a person smokes in about three to six years. This study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Although these studies were performed in mice, the study concluded that vaping is likely harmful to people as well. More research needs to be performed on the correlation between e-cigarettes and human cancer.

What are the side effects of vaping?

Every person has a unique body and chemical makeup that will interact with vaping in a particular way. Some common side effects associated with vaping are dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, coughing, nosebleeds, dizziness, and itchiness.

Is nicotine-free vaping safe?

Nicotine is an addictive substance, so nicotine-free vaping is better for you. You can vape with flower or concentrates that are free of nicotine. However, there still needs to be studies performed on the number and concentration of chemicals in vape solutions to determine if this is a safe practice.

What are the health risks of vaping?

Vaping can have a negative effect on health. There need to be more studies performed on the long-term effects of e-cigarette aerosol on humans. Some of the common side effects that develop are dry skin, eyes, and mouth, nicotine addiction, nosebleeds and insomnia when the person quits.

Can I die from vaping?

You can die from vaping-related lung injuries. Investigations are being executed across many states to determine if vaping injuries are caused by any particular product or manufacturer. Vapes should never be used by pregnant women, youth or people with lung illnesses.

How much does a Pax cost?

A starter kit for a Pax 3 vaporizer starts at $199.99 for the device and $249.99 for the complete kit, including a concentrate insert. The Pax 3 is designed to vaporize both flower and concentrate and comes with a ten year limited warranty. This price is comparable with the Firefly 2+ (Plus) portable vaporizer, another high quality vaporizer listed at $249.95.

What You Can Do

We encourage patients to learn about the products they consume. Ask questions and learn about the products you are purchasing.

Although vapes are better for you than cigarettes, there still needs to be a lot of research performed to understand the effects of the chemical makeup of e-cigarette aerosol on the lungs. Studies have found that the large variety of flavors, from custard to candy flavors, appeal to the younger generation. Marketing has conveyed that vapes are healthier than cigarettes but the younger generation needs to understand that e-cigarettes still have risk associated with them.

It is illegal for anyone under the age of eighteen to smoke. We believe in educating our customers so they can pass their knowledge on to their friends or children so people can be more aware and make the right choices for their health.

Educating your children is essential to helping them make good, informed choices.
