What is Microdosing?
A microdose of cannabis is a quantity that strikes the perfect balance between an amount large enough to produce therapeutic benefits and yet small enough to avoid the plant’s well-known psychoactive effects. Throughout all of pharmacology, doctors and other healthcare professionals often endeavor to find the minimum effective dose (MED) of a medication. Fall below the MED range and the drug will not have any effect. Overshoot it and the side effects may intrude upon your life in undesired ways.
In many medications, if you significantly outpace the effective dose, you may discover its maximum tolerated dose (MTD). Exceeding the MTD of the most commonly prescribed drugs for anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain (Ambien, Xanax and Codeine, respectively) will put you in some very toxic territory. These drugs have a very narrow therapeutic window between their MED and MTD. Cannabis, on the other hand, is blessed with a wide and forgiving therapeutic window. It is very low in toxicity. This means that taking an excessively large dose may leave you quite impaired, but it is not toxic.
What people who microdose aim to avoid is cannabis’ signature psychoactive impairment. With some careful chemistry, they try to discover their own personal minimally effective dose so to imbibe all of cannabis’ bevy of benefits, no strings attached.
Microdosing is perfect for patients who aren’t looking for a recreational high. Humankind has highly-regarded cannabis as an effective medicine since ancient times. As it has become increasingly available, more people than ever are turning to cannabis for its medicinal properties. Many medical cannabis users may have self-medicated long ago and are now returning to it as the legal restrictions have relaxed in recent years.
Every mammal (including humans) has cannabinoid receptors encoded into their DNA. The human body’s cannabinoid receptors are perfectly suited to respond positively in the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), cannabis’ most biologically active elements. This makes cannabis ideal for treating chronic pain and inflammation, as well as other ailments. Best of all, cannabis is non-toxic and non-addictive. It is virtually impossible to overdose on it. Its most significant side effects are its psychoactive properties—a pitfall you can potentially avoid with microdosing.

Who is Microdosing Cannabis?
So many people are coming home to cannabis. These people are seeking a safe and effective remedy without the hazardous baggage of prescription drugs. Microdosing has become a popular option for entirely new demographics of cannabis consumers who are drawn to the drug for its medicinal, rather than its recreational, applications.
The cannabis market is growing amongst people who may have shied away from it, or hidden their use, because of its old stigma. Thankfully, the times are indeed changing.
Empowered young women are letting their hemp flag fly. In a piece for Cosmopolitan magazine, Brooklyn-based health and beauty writer Charlotte Palermino expressed her frustration at the absurd irony of having to keep her favorite anti-anxiety remedy to herself in the company of co-workers who would “joke about popping Ambiens and downing wine on red-eye flights.” Professional young women like her have hidden their use for years “to avoid negative perceptions at work” because “happy hours, not blunts, are associated with the corner office.” Fortunately, because the subtle effects of microdosing are barely noticeable—even by the user—Ms. Palermino’s close-minded associates would have no idea unless she chose to reveal herself.
Mothers often bear the burden of their stress and anxiety in silence. They love and care for their families so much that they may be reluctant to seek a treatment that might diminish their selfless attentiveness at home. Mature women microdose to treat insomnia and to relieve the pain of migraines. A minimally effective dose of cannabis provides relief without having to worry about being a little loopy when the little ones are home.
These children of the ’60s may have tried cannabis many years ago. They may have even been heavy users. But they left cannabis behind as they entered adulthood. Now they are feeling the aches and pains that come with age. Recent changes in society and their own hard-won wisdom are urging them to reconsider an old remedy. But Boomers don’t need an explosive dose of cannabis to enjoy its medicinal benefits. Microdosing is ideal for people with a low or diminished tolerance. The technique enables you to find the perfect amount of cannabis for you, one baby step at a time.
The economy hasn’t been kind to many Millennials. Fortunately, these unconventional problem-solvers have found all sorts of ways to do more with less. They rent instead of buy. They travel instead of cluttering their lives with expensive possessions. Millennials discovered microdosing as a means of extracting the maximum benefit from the smallest possible amount of cannabis. Microdosing helps keep Millennials’ healthcare costs in check.
Life hackers are obsessed with achieving peak performance. The microdosing movement actually sprung from life hacker culture. Life hacker communities frequently share tips and tricks for obtaining an edge in their relentless pursuit of perfection. Microdosing cannabis allows them to derive benefit from one of nature’s oldest and kindest remedies without it affecting their laser-like focus.

How Much Cannabis Is in a Microdose?
The typical microdose is between two and five milligrams of THC or higher. Determining your minimally effective dose is a very personalized process. You will get to know your body better as you discover the optimum dose for you. It is best to carry out this process with edibles, oils or tinctures because it is difficult to achieve precise measurements when smoking flower.
If you are already a regular smoker, you should take a break from cannabis for at least two days to lower your tolerance. We also advise abstaining from alcohol to arrive at the most accurate conclusions.
Start with a two-milligram dose of the cannabis product. Administer it twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Repeat this process for two to three days and observe how you feel. If you feel nothing, add one milligram to your dose. Then, observe your response for another two to three days. The goal is to find the dose that produces the most minimal noticeable effect. Keep experimenting until you find the dose that works for you.
